In Moscow, on Sunday, 7th June 1981,
Alla and Sergei Kournikov gave birth to a daughter, who they named ANNA.
Coming from an athletic family, (Alla was a tennis player and Sergei, a
Greco-Roman wrestler.) it is no wonder that at the prodigious age of
five, she started to play tennis. February of 1992 she moved to the Nick
Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Bradenton, Florida, to be with her coach,
Nick Bollettieri. She was very successful whilst in junior competition.
She ended 1995 as the ITF Junior World Champion ranked No.1. She won the
Orange Bowl 18s, the 1995 European Championships , and the 1995 Italian
Open Juniors.
She was a 1995 Wimbledon Juniors Semi-Finalist, and a 1995 French Open
Juniors Quarter-Finalist. As a qualifier, she won her first professional
title at a 1996 ITF Women's Circuit satellite event in Midland,
Michigan, USA, where she collected wins over Julie Steven, Jana Nejedly,
Rene Simpson, Tami Whitlinger-Jones and Lindsay Lee. Directly after
winning the tournament, she flew to Oklahoma City in time to win her
first-round qualifying match the same day. As the fifth seed, she earned
her second pro title at an ITF Women's Circuit satellite event in
Rockford, Illinois, USA, where she collected wins against Sonya
Jeyaseelan, Tara Snyder, and Yuka Yoshida.
Her biggest success to date was making it to the Semi-Finals at
Wimbledon, after which she achieved her highest yet ranking of 25.
