Mariah Carey was born on March 27, 1970
near Long Island, NY, to Alfred and Patricia Carey. She has both an
older brother and sister, Morgan and Alison respectively. When she was
around three years old, her parents divorced due in part to racial
prejudice against them (Alfred is Venezualen and African-American,
Patricia is Irish). She subsequently was raised by her mother, a voice
coach and opera singer, and was forced to move often because of
difficult finances. It was also around the time she was three that she
began to sing, often singing to her brother's radio or to spite her
parents.
Mariah attended Harborfields High School in Greenlawn, NY, where she
claims she was not much of a student. During this time, she sang for her
brother's band and recorded her first demo in a studio her friend worked
for. Because they were borrowing the studio, they were forced to record
into the early hours of the morning. As a result Mariah often missed
school, bringing her the nickname "Mirage". Just days after
graduating from high school, Mariah moved to New York City with a
friend, where they shared a mattress on the floor of a dingy apartment.
During her time in the city, Mariah worked a variety of odd jobs to
support herself, including hat/coat-checking, hostessing, and sweeping
hair salons. Before long, she won a job singing backup for pop star
Brenda K. Starr, which eventually became her road to success. At a party
with Starr in the late eighties, Mariah met with record execs and
attempted to give one her demo. Instead it was snatched up by Tommy
Mottola of then CBS Records. He listened to it in the limo and shortly
after signed her to his label.
Since then, Mariah has had a whirlwind success, including number one
hits, platinum albums, Grammy awards, and anything else you can imagine.
Mariah Carey released her eponymous debut album in 1990. Mariah Carey
has sold more than 12 million albums worldwide and yielded a
record-setting four consecutive #1 singles on Billboard's Top Pop
Singles chart: "Vision of Love," "Love Takes Time,"
"Someday," and "I Don't Wanna Cry."
Her 1992 album, Emotions, generated her fifth consecutive #1 single,
placing Mariah Carey in the Top Ten All-Time achievers of Most
Consecutive #1 Hits. Emotions also earned Mariah two Grammy nominations
("Best Pop Vocal, Female" and, with Walter Afanasieff,
"Best Producer") and an American Music Award ("Favorite
Female Artist, Soul/R&B").
On March 17, 1992, Mariah Carey performed on MTV Unplugged. That
appearance led to an EP which sold more than five million copies
worldwide, a #1 single ("I'll Be There") and a home video
which has sold more than a quarter-of-a-million copies worldwide.
In 1993, Mariah Carey released Music Box, which has sold more than 24
million copies worldwide and generated the #1 singles "Dreamlover"
and "Hero" as well as the Top 10 hit "Without You."
Mariah Carey's holiday album, Merry Christmas, caused a Yuletide flurry
of more than eight million copies sold worldwide shortly after its
release in November 1994.
Over the course of her career, Mariah Carey has been the recipient of
numerous music industry awards and honors. She won Grammys in 1990 for
Best New Artist and Best Pop Vocal Female ("Vision of Love").
The same year, Mariah picked up three Soul Train Awards: Best New
Artist, Best Album (Mariah Carey) and Best Single, Female ("Vision
of Love").
In the coming year she will embark on a world tour and release a new
album, and will no doubt further her success far into the coming
millennium.
